Welcoming a newborn into your life is such a magical moment! Capturing those first days with beautiful photos is something you’ll treasure forever. But sometimes preparing for a newborn photography session while surviving those early newborn days can also feel overwhelming. Don’t worry though, this is why I'm here. I've been an Edmonton Newborn Photographer for almost two decades, and have gather a lot of knowledge over that time and can confidently help walk you through everything you need to know to make your session smooth, fun, and full of those heart-melting moments, as well as help take out as much stress as possible.
Why Newborn Session Preparation Matters
Getting ready for your newborn photo shoot is about creating a calm, cozy environment where your baby feels safe and comfortable. When you prepare well, the session flows naturally, and you get those authentic, peaceful shots that tell your baby’s unique story.
Here’s what I’ve learned from years, decades in fact, of photographing little ones: the more relaxed everyone is, the better the photos turn out. These tips are universal, for whether you are coming into the newborn session or I'm coming to your home for an at-home lifestyle session (If you aren't sure what style of newborn session is right for you, take a peek at the gallery for inspiration. So, let’s dive into some practical tips to help you achieve exactly that.

How to Prepare for Your Newborn Photos: The Essentials
Before your session, there are a few key things to keep in mind. I always recommend parents read the detailed guide I email out to them prior to their session, but here’s a quick rundown:
Timing is everything: The best time for newborn photos is usually within the first two weeks after birth. Babies are sleepier and more flexible, making it easier to pose them gently. I talk more about timing here if you want more details on that.
Keep baby cozy: A warm room helps your little one stay calm and sleepy. That means in the studio I usually set the temperature around 24-26°C and if we are in your home I ask you to turn up the heat or turn off the A/C.
Feed and soothe: Plan to feed your baby right before the session. If you are coming into the studio, we will normally start with you feeding baby. A full tummy means a happy, sleepy baby who’s ready to snuggle.
Bring essentials: Diapers, wipes, a favourite blanket or stuffie you want to incorporate, and a pacifier can be lifesavers during the shoot. I do have extra things like wipes and diapers thought too! If you are bringing an older sibling into the studio don't forget to bring things for them too like snacks. I do also have a few surprises for them to play with in the studio too.
Outfit choices and props: Simple, soft fabrics work best. Avoid anything too tight or scratchy. Neutral colours or pastels keep the focus on your baby’s sweet face. For props, I have soooooo many blankets, headbands, hats, wraps, and baskets you honestly do not have to worry about any of that. Come as you are.

When Should You Book Your Newborn Photos after Baby is Born?
This can be a challenging question and lots of personal variables come into play here. Normally we aim to book you in within those first two week of life. Many parents find the third week after birth to be the toughest. This is often when babies go through growth spurts, cluster feeding, and sometimes fussiness. Sleep can be unpredictable, and parents might feel overwhelmed. For this reason sometime we try to avoid this time, but you know your baby and yourself best. However, knowing this can help you plan your newborn session around a time when your baby is more settled. If you’re booking a photographer, try to schedule the session during a window when your baby is likely to be calm and sleepy. Flexibility is key!

Setting the Scene: Creating a Calm Environment
Your baby’s comfort is the top priority. Here’s how you can help set the perfect scene:
Lighting: Natural light is the best friend of newborn photography. If you’re shooting at home, pick a room with big windows and soft, indirect sunlight. Edmonton's seasons can play a role in when the best time is too, as the number of hours of daylight we have depending on the time of year can dramatically change.
Noise: White noise machines or soft lullabies can soothe your baby and mask distracting sounds. I have these in the Edmonton newborn studio and if we are in your home will also take care of this and bring it.
Minimal distractions: Keep the room quiet and calm. The Edmonton studio provides a beautiful canvas for your photos, that is timeless. If we are in your home, don't worry about tidying up too much, I'm a professional declutter-er when I need to be and you can relax ;)

Tips for Parents: Staying Relaxed and Enjoying the Moment
I know it can feel a bit nerve-wracking to have your newborn photographed. But trust me, your calm energy will help your baby feel safe and loved. Here are some tips to keep things easy and enjoyable:
Dress comfortably: You might be holding or soothing your baby a lot, so wear something you feel good in.
Be patient: Newborn sessions can take a few hours. It’s all about following your baby’s rhythm.
Bring snacks and water: You’ll want to stay energized and hydrated.
Involve siblings or partners: Their presence can add warmth and connection to the photos.
Trust me as your photographer: I know how to handle little ones gently and safely is always my top priority. I've taken training from industry leading experts, including physiotherapists specialize in babies anatomy, to ensure your babies safety.
