Newborn series: How old should my baby be for newborn photos?

Updated: May 5, 2022

If you are a new mom or expectant mom and starting to research newborn photographers. In that case, you will stumble across one thing that many photographers will tell you. That is that the ideal window for newborn photos is between 5-14 days old. I will be controversial here and tell you that is a lie. This narrow age range stresses many new moms out while searching for newborn photographers. This is especially since so many of my clients don't book in advance and sometimes don't start the search until baby is around one week old.

So here is the honest info....whenever you get your baby's photos done is perfect. I have over13 years of experience photographing newborns now. 13! That is a lot of babies I've photographed, hundreds in fact, and let me tell you, every single baby is different. Sometimes at 5 days old, they are wide awake and won't sleep. Sometimes at 4 weeks old, they are super curled up and sleep the whole time. It depends on the baby and having a trusted photographer with experience whose main priority is your baby's safety.

Now some patterns can be seen, and I will break them down here. Within those first three weeks, baby can be a little more sleepy and a little more flexible and curly. No matter the age, any baby can decide they aren't sleeping. If your baby is older and this happens, the bonus is they are more likely to have strong eye contact! In short, anytime you have your baby photographed is perfect for you and tells your story at that moment in time. Trust me.

There are so many fresh newborns on the blog already; you can see them here. So today, I wanted to share a special little girl who was a little older. Meet Jacqueline. She was so incredibly calm and perfect at two months old, and she had unbelievable eye contact! Plus, a little bonus was she still did fall asleep for her photos, and I got to pose her as well!
